In 1991 during a construction project human remains were found in the center of the financial district. It was soon realized that the remains belonged to what was designated as the cemetary for blacks which began in the early 1700's. The cemetary consisted of slaves and freemen.

There was a call to halt the construction of several building until the remains that were found were examined to determine who these people were. Thanks to the archeologists and the Howard University research we know more about the bone breaking work of our Northern slave ancestors.

40% of the remains that were excavated were of children. When I viewed the video that they showed at the visitors center, I wished that they had more of an exhibition and showed more.

The monument only represents a 1/8 of the actual burial ground size that covered 3 nyc blocks. NYC blocks are long and wide. More than 20,000 remains still are uncovered and undiscovered and remain under the sidewalks that we walk day to day.

The memorial opened October 2007.
